9:30 AM - Time for breakfast in the dorm's canteen. "There's a good selection of food here. Meals are also included in my tuition, so it makes sense to eat here. If you can get anything 'for free' in New York, you should go for it."

10:15 AM - There is some time before the first class to practice. "I listen to music, write it down and play it. It's a good way to teach myself new things. I really think that if you want to learn how to play any instrument, you can do it. It just takes a lot of practice."

11:00 AM - Gideon has his first class of the day 'Jazz Business'. "Music is not really a lucrative field of work. So in this class they teach us how to make money."

12:30 PM - Between classes, there is time for composing, practicing and - of course - lunch. "I enjoy listening to Bach. So to really understand his music, I now try to write music using his 'rules'."

All of the sudden, he jumps up, runs out of his room into one of the practice rooms and starts translating the notes from his paper to the piano keys. "I think I found a solution," he says. He is focussed on his music, completely in a different world. Every now and then he'll mumble something like "I almost have it" or "Shit this doesn't work" until he he says "Oooh now I get it, it's actually a very simple solution, I just tried to make it more complicated than it is."

After he writes down his last note he explains: "When you compose you create a problem and try to find a solution for it. When you work with certain melodies there are rules. Sometimes it is more interesting to break those."

02:30 PM - The second class of the day is about to start: Big band practice. "It is funny how in this building most of it looks like any other university building: grey and boring. And then there are these few parts where all of the money goes to, like these red stairs."

06:00 PM - There is some time to kill between classes, so Gideon finds a practice room and plays his saxophone for a bit. "The first time you play a new piece with a group always feels kind of magical. Therefore it is important that you know how to read notes and feel completely confident playing your instrument. If you don't, you won't be able to keep up and you'll lose the magic."

11:00 PM - Gideon participates in a jam session at Smoke on the Upper West Side. During these sessions musicians can put their names on a list. They will randomly be put together and play songs. "See that picture of George Coleman up there? He's kind of a hero here. I once played with him."
